Amazing Grace
Located in the heart of London, close to the Bank of England, St Mary Woolnoth was the parish of the Reverend John Newton from 1779 until his death in 1807. Newton was a leading Abolitionist, author of the hymn 'Amazing Grace', and spiritual mentor of the parliamentary leader of the Abolition movement, William Wilberforce.
It was also the church of the First Fleet contractor, William Richards, who lived just around the corner. Newton buried Richards' first wife, Sarah, at St Mary Woolnoth in 1781, and Richards would have heard the evangelical minister and prominent Abolitionist preach many times.
